- "Smash that petty... where did she get to? Lamarr? Come out of at that place!"
- ―Isaac Kleiner[src]
Lamarr, sometimes referred to as Hedy, is a pet Headcrab belonging to Isaac Kleiner.
Biography
Background
Lamarr is a Headcrab who has been debeaked, preventing her from latching onto ('coupling with') and controlling a host. It is unknown when or why Kleiner originally captured Lamarr, though he has tamed her (to some extent) and keeps her as a pet.
Appearances
Half-Life two
Lamarr's get-go advent is in the Half-Life ii chapter A Red Letter Day, when Kleiner gives Barney the award of presenting the famed HEV Suit to Gordon. Equally Barney opens the door to the suit, Lamarr attempts to latch onto Barney's head. After being removed Lamarr crawls around, observing the expanse. She then jumps upward on a locker and into a vent. Kleiner remarks that "It'll be another calendar week before I tin coax her out of there". Subsequently, while Gordon is nigh to teleport to Eli'south lab, Lamarr jumps out of a vent and into the teleporter, damaging wiring along the way, and causing Gordon to teleport randomly to various areas around Urban center 17 and eventually directly exterior Kleiner's lab. This forces Gordon to travel to Black Mesa Due east on pes. Lamarr tin be seen briefly in 1 of the teleported locations, in what looks similar a sandy wasteland with a destroyed auto. Lamarr jumps away from Gordon (apparently escaping the reflux) to hunt after some crows. Gordon and so teleports away, Lamarr seemingly being too far abroad to teleport with him. It's possible she transitioned to several other areas equally Gordon did following a separate path.

Kleiner and Lamarr greeting Alyx and Gordon with a shotgun, mirroring a scene in Half-Life.
Through whatever means, Lamarr somewhen plant her way back to Kleiner. She is seen peeking out of the door with Kleiner when Gordon and Alyx appear in the teleportation chamber earlier scurrying off to hide from the group, perchance frightened by Gordon'southward crowbar, every bit Kleiner suggests.
In her concluding appearance, she drops from the top of the screen after the ending credits and jumps toward the player.
Half-Life 2: Episode One
Lamarr is safe and sound in Half-Life 2: Episode 1, where she makes a brief cameo appearance, causing further mischief to Dr. Kleiner during his live and unedited evacuation broadcast in City 17. In this cameo, she is wandering frantically around Kleiner's lab, while he warns her to stay abroad from hot lamps. It is indicated that some Resistance troops take a dim view on Kleiner (and Lamarr), as the man in the Consoling Couple states: "We're all starving, and Kleiner's Headcrab is probably eating class-A head!".
One-half-Life ii: Episode 2
In Half-Life 2: Episode Two Lamarr goes to sleep inside Arne Magnusson's rocket while the door to it is still open. If the player chooses to close the rocket'southward hatch, Kleiner notices a "payload anomaly of an extra viii and a half pounds" directly before the launch. Not realizing the significance, he and Magnusson dismiss this and decide to launch anyway, sending Lamarr into space. What happened to Lamarr is unknown only it is presumed that she did non survive due to the lack of survival supplies.
To achieve the Little Rocket Man achievement, the gnome establish in the commencement chapter of Episode Two must be placed in the rocket adjacent to Lamarr, then that (according to the Prima guide) "she can have a companion on her voyage."
Appearance
Lamarr differs from the Standard Headcrab in that the typical black "teeth" are missing. Otherwise, she is virtually indistinguishable from a normal Headcrab. Although Kleiner refers to Lamarr as a female, Headcrabs accept never been explicitly established to have multiple genders or clear gendered organs. The Gonarch is suspected to exist a female headcrab due to its ability to produce small headcrab-like creatures, and Lamarr lacks its rather distinctive reproductive housing sack. Perhaps referring to her equally female is merely an affectation on the role of Kleiner, or mayhap she is merely still a juvenile on her way to greater things, it is not known. Due to being debeaked, Lamarr appears to exist unable to depict nutrients as a normal Headcrab does, instead subsisting on a diet of watermelons—this is indicated by a mail service-it note posted on a board in Kleiner's laboratory, serving as a reminder to find more watermelons (presumably suitable due to its full general resemblance to a human head).
Personality
Lamarr'south behavior seems to prove it is possible to "tame" a Headcrab. Merely beingness debeaked would presumably fail to suppress the aggressive, parasitic nature of the species. Kleiner states that she may attempt to "couple with your head... fruitlessly, of class." Though Lamarr would seem to not be entirely docile, as shown when she is first met — lunging at Barney, attacking a bird on the rafters, and and so escaping into a ventilation shaft — she can also be seen walking beside Dr. Kleiner and peeking curiously effectually a corner.
Behind the scenes

Hedy Lamarr.
- Lamarr was named after the late 1930s actress and scientist Hedy Lamarr, who co-invented an early grade of spread spectrum communications technology.[1]
- Alyx originally was the character to own a female pet alien named "Skitch".[1]
- In the beta files, Barney asks Kleiner how he tin keep "that pest", after "what it did to your buddies". It is unknown if he is referring to Lamarr direct equally harming people (which plainly does not happen in HL2 nor its expansions, and if Lamarr has tried to learn a host she would exist impossible to remove anyway), or Headcrabs in general. He may exist referring to the fact that the bulk of Headcrab victims were scientists during the Black Mesa Incident.
Trivia
- In Kleiner'south Lab, 1 of the notes on the wall reads, "Find more watermelons for Lamarr", suggesting that Headcrabs are omnivores (most likely non pure herbivores, during the Black Mesa Incident several Headcrab Zombies tin be seen shoveling meat from a dead scientist into their "mouths").
- In the Episode Ii carte du jour screen for White Wood, Lamarr can occasionally exist seen.
- In the Half-Life 2 chapter A Ruddy Letter Day, Lamarr tin be killed by using the "Impulse 101" crook. It will reveal red blood instead of yellow. Kleiner volition nonetheless follow his AI scripting and talk to her equally if she was all the same live, and the following "teleporter incident" will still occur. It is not possible to damage Lamarr after the thespian has come back from Nova Prospekt.
- In the Episode Two chapter Our Mutual Fiend, Lamarr tin can be seen lunging into the white wood rocket. The hatch can be closed to trap Lamarr inside, and Kleiner volition notice a "payload anomaly of eight and a half pounds" merely the rocket launch will go alee anyway.
- When revisiting Kleiner's Lab after leaving Nova Prospekt, if the player waits long enough after existence told to go with Dog, Kleiner volition say to Gordon "Lamarr is extremely wary of your crowbar", presumably a reference to the crowbar as a commonly used weapon to kill Headcrabs with.
- At the finish of the Half-Life two credits, Lamarr enters the screen through a hidden entryway while Kleiner searches for her and jumps at the camera.
- During Episode One, Lamarr's model has teeth.
